Although most pop stars now release an album every 12 months, pop’s reigning queen, Katy Perry, has been riding high on the success of Teenage Dream for almost two straight years, and she’s not putting it away anytime soon.

EMI announced today that Perry will release a special edition of her sophomore disc, which spawned five No. 1 singles,  called Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection on March 27.

The rerelease will include three new songs, as well as radio mixes of “E.T” featuring Kanye West and “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” featuring Missy Elliott, the acoustic version of “The One That Got Away,” and a seven-minute Tommy Sunshine mega-mix of six already-released Dream singles.

In a press release, Perry states, “This is the complete story of Teenage Dream… I’m moving forward and had a few things left to get off my chest.” Of course, I’m assuming she’s not talking about her cupcake bra, so perhaps Perry has some confessional laments about the end of her romance to Russel Brand in store. Or maybe just some more Dr. Luke party anthems. We’ll have to wait and see.

Now, before you start accusing the pop diva of simply trying to take over Michael Jackson’s record of the most No. 1 singles released from one album (which many people did when she released multiple versions of “The One That Got Away”), read this caveat from Billboard: Perry and Jackson will remain tied for the most Hot 100 toppers from any album regardless of the performance of any singles from “Confection.” Should any song released from “Confection” reach No. 1, it would count as a Hot 100 No. 1 from “Confection” and not “Dream””

So if that’s not the ulterior motive for rereleasing Dream, it’s likely an effort to keep Perry’s fans satisfied and keep her presence in the marketplace while she works on a new album. (Rihanna has set the standard — pop stars don’t get to take breaks anymore!) But this move will inevitably leave some people are asking why she wouldn’t just wait and release a new album altogether.

It’s becoming an increasingly common tactic in the current Hot 100 world — add to an already successful album with a deluxe reissues. Lady Gaga could have pushed a whole new disc after The Fame. Instead, she added eight new songs to her original set and released The Fame Monster.

Ke$ha’s Cannibal was also packaged as a deluxe edition of her debut Animal, while Nicki Minaj’s upcoming Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, makes it sound like a reboot of her 2010 debut, Pink Friday, though it actually contains all new originals. (The logic behind that choice remains unclear.)

What do you think about Perry rereleasing her album? Do you think she should wait for a new collection to come together, or does it even matter to the buying public, since you’re more likely to download her individual singles anyway?
