Katy Perry says Russell Brand was “a magical man” when they met four years ago, but the spell wore off shortly after their Indian wedding in October 2010. And it bottomed out when the actor sent her a text 14 months later informing her he planned to file for divorce.
“He’s a very smart man, and I was in love with him when I married him,” Perry tells Vogue in a revealing cover interview for its July issue. “Let’s just say I haven’t heard from him since he texted me saying he was divorcing me December 31, 2011.”
Perry, 28, says that Brand, 38, seemed to have difficulty accepting her role as a successful musician and businesswoman – even if that’s what he thought he wanted.
“At first when I met him he wanted an equal, and I think a lot of times strong men do want an equal, but then they get that equal and they’re like, I can’t handle the equalness,” she says.
Perry moved on with musician John Mayer in 2012, and says their coupling was much more than a casual rebound relationship. Desite his lothario reputation, she says, Mayer is a great guy with a “tortured soul.”
“I was madly in love with him. I still am madly in love with him,” says Perry, who was spotted out with Mayer earlier this month.
Adds the pop star, who is currently at work on her third album, “All I can say about that relationship is that he’s got a beautiful mind. Beautiful mind, tortured soul. I do have to figure out why I am attracted to these broken birds.”
It’s been nearly a year since her divorce was officially finalised (with a smiley face no less), so it’s about time Katy Perry started chatting about it in interviews.
The former Mrs Russell Brand was at the ASCAP ‘I Create Music’ Expo in Hollywood when a brave reporter asked her about the two tracks on her album which are clearly about the split – Part of Me and Wide Awake.
And the Fireworks singer addressed the question head on.
“It’s a very tiny elephant…it’s like a little tchotchke now,” she said. “The Big D – you can say it!”
For those wondering what the heck a ‘tchotchke’ is, Wikipedia tells us it’s a Yiddish word meaning ‘small bauble or trifle with connotations of worthlessness or disposability and tackiness’.
Singer Katy Perry says performing her single Firework at a charity fundraiser with autistic fan Jodi DePiazza has been her career’s highlight.
The 28-year-old singer shared the stage with DePiazza, 11, at a taping of Comedy Central’s show Night of Too Many Stars last year. Her fan had played the piano and sang along with Perry.
“Firework is the most important song I’ve written. Performing it with an autistic girl accompanying her on piano and vocal harmony at a fundraiser was the most important performance of my career,” Perry said at the ASCAP I Create Music Expo.

Katy Perry has confirmed that she is “halfway through” her new album.
The singer is currently working on the follow-up to 2010′s Teenage Dream and has described writing sessions with songwriter Bonnie McKee as “emotional”.
“Bonnie and I argue [like] we’re in the ring fighting for the best lyric,” Perry told Billboard. “Working with her is like an emotional abuse session.”
The star has teamed with McKee and Greg Kurstin for a new track titled ‘Double Rainbow’, but is currently “halfway through” completing the album.
“When I put myself on a timeline, when I tell the record company when I want to release the album, that’s when the race starts,” she added. “That’s when I put pressure on myself.”
Perry’s last album Teenage Dream produced worldwide hits ‘California Gurls’, ‘Teenage Dream’, ‘Firework’, ‘E.T.’, ‘Last Friday Night’, ‘The One That Got Away’, ‘Part Of Me’ and ‘Wide Awake’.
The collection produced five consecutive Hot 100 number ones in the US, matching a record previously set by Michael Jackson.

Perry recently split from boyfriend John Mayer for the second time, with reports claiming that he may have been jealous of her friendship with Brand.
Katy Perry is following in the footsteps of Ashton Kutcher.
The pop star has signed on to be the newest celebrity face of Popchips.
The company announced Wednesday that Perry will not only serve as an “ambassador” for the snack food, but also become an investor in the brand and act as a creative partner.
“We’re thrilled to have one of the music industry’s most creative, charismatic and driven stars join the popchips team,” Popchips co-founder and CEO Keith Belling said in a statement.
“Her personality and passion are a fantastic fit for the brand, and we look forward to working together to take our brand to the next level,” he added.
Perry will be featured in Popchips’ new advertising campaign this fall.
Katy Perry probably doesn’t know the first thing about cricket (even after being married to Russell Brand), which might explain why, during an April performance at the opening of India’s Premier League, she sought a little onstage guidance from a pro. And now, that lesson has landed her in hot water.
Yes, according to U.K. tabloid The Sun, Perry now faces an indecency charge in India stemming from a moment during her show when she brought Australian cricketer Doug Bollinger onstage to demonstrate the proper technique for swinging a bat. Bollinger cozied up behind her and gripped her microphone, a seemingly innocuous gesture that so angered a lawyer in attendance that he filed a charge against the pair — and an Indian court is set to hear the case.
That lawyer, K. Jebakumar, claims the gesture — and subsequent hip-shaking dance the two shared — was “obscene and lascivious,” and “distracted students who were writing exams at the time.” Following the performance, Jebakumar filed a claim with the Madras High Court, stating that Perry and Bollinger committed offenses under India’s Indecent Representation of Woman Act. According to local press, Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra and IPL chairman Rajiv Shukla were also cited in the complaint.
Currently, neither Perry nor Bollinger has actually been charged with indecency, and neither is required to appear when the court considers the claim July 31. A spokesperson for Perry did not respond to MTV News’ request for comment on the matter by press time.
Almost two years after Katy Perry and Russell Brand tied the knot in India, the ex-couple are now divorced. Brand filed for divorce from the pop star in December, and it was finalized on Monday (July 16).
According to E! News although Perry and Brand reached their divorce agreement back in February, by California law, they had to wait six months for the union to be officially dissolved. Brand’s filing, which cited irreconcilable differences, came just 14 months after their lavish ceremony in front of family and friends. The exes famously hooked up after flirting at the 2009 MTV VMAs.
The two have addressed their split several times since first announcing their divorce. Brand spoke about it in a few interviews, including a sit-down with ITV1′s “Lorraine” show, where he said that the marriage “did work out in a way.” He added that “you just have to have acceptance of things. She is a person that I love, but now this is a new time.”
The comedian also opened up to Ellen DeGeneres on her talk show about his famous ex. “I still love her as a human being,” he said. “But sometimes when you’re in a relationship, I suppose it doesn’t work out, does it? But that doesn’t mean I regret it or anything. I was very happy to be married with her. She’s such a beautiful human being and I just have only love and positivity for her.
“You can’t absolutely make everything the way you want it to be in life,” he continued. “Sometimes things are just different and then you have to just move with that and try and remain in contact with what is beautiful about yourself and with each other with any situation.”
Meanwhile, Perry addressed the split in her 3-D film, “Katy Perry: Part of Me,” which hit theaters earlier this month. She explained to MTV News why she made sure her divorce made the film’s final cut.
“It’s not about the problem; it’s about how you solve it,” Perry said. “And if I can be an example showing people that they don’t have to lay down and die because they’ve been thrown a curveball, then that’s great. If I can help someone else out because they feel like the only loner in the world or the only person that is going through the situation and they see me and they’re inspired to keep moving forward, then I’ve done my job.”
Katy Perry‘s Twitter fans are getting the first opportunity see the recording star’s upcoming 3D concert film.
Paramount’s Insurge Pictures announced Thursday it will sneak Katy Perry: Part of Me on July 2 in 100 theaters across North America, three days before the movie’s nationwide release on July 5. The 3D event pic will play exclusively on RealD systems during the special sneak.
Paramount and Twitter have designated a special hashtag that will direct fans to a direct link allowing them to buy tickets for the advance showings.
The promotion continues a unique partnership between Insurge Pictures and Twitter, in which Perry‘s 22 million Twitter followers have the opportunity to share their thoughts through their own Tweets and be a part of the filmmaking process.
“From Katy‘s first Tweet announcing the movie, her fans have been incredibly passionate and supportive and we want to make sure they are among the first to see the film they helped shape,” Insurge Pictures president Amy Powell said.
“The use of Twitter throughout the making and release of Katy Perry: Part of Me illustrates the power of Twitter to break down barriers between artists like Katy and their fans,” Twitter CEO Dick Costolo added.
Here’s the cover of the Katy Perry comic book “Fame“. The 27-year-old’s life shown in “Fame: Katy Perry” has her going from her Californian church-going upbringing under her Christian parents to bouncing around several music labels in Los Angeles until striking a deal that landed her first big hits, “I Kissed A Girl,” and “Hot n Cold.”
Katy Perry is back on the market — again.
The 27-year-old singer has split from Florence + the Machine guitarist, Robert Ackroyd. The pair started dating about a month ago when they were photographed kissing at Coachella Music Festival.
“It wasn’t that serious,” a source tells Us Weekly of Perry‘s relationship with Ackroyd. “It’s not a nasty thing and they are still talking, but Katy told him to do his thing and they’ll talk soon.”
“No hard feelings,” another source explains to Us. “She’s really busy and so is he.”
Perry still appears to be coping with her divorce from Russell Brand, 36. Sunday night at the Billboard Music Awards, the “Part of Me” singer seemed to address their divorce after 14-months of marriage during a performance of her new song, “Wide Awake.”
“I’m wide awake. I was in the dark, I was falling hard with an open heart,” she sings. “How did I read the stars so wrong. I was dreaming for so long. I wish I knew then what I know now. I wouldn’t dive in, I wouldn’t bow down.”
But, Perry says (through song) that she’s moved on.
“Not losing any sleep, I picked up every piece and landed on my feet,” the song continues. “Need nothing to complete myself. I am born again, out of the lion’s den. I don’t have to pretend. The story’s over now, the end.”
And Perry even brought a hot date to the awards — her 91-year-old grandmother! “My date to tonight’s Billboard Music Awards is hotter than the Las Vegas weather,” she tweeted. “Smokin’!”
The first round of nominations for the 2012 Teen Choice Awardswere announced on Friday. Teenagers can vote for one category per day on the Teen Choice Awards’ official website. The show airs live on Sunday, July 22 on FOX.

Katy Perry has some news for her Katy Cats. She just wrapped up production on a brand-spankin’-new music video. The singer tweeted about the shoot, teasing that the video will play some part in her forthcoming 3-D big-screen spectacle “Katy Perry: Part of Me,” out in July.
“3rd long ass day of shooting … the new music video!!!!! #workinggirl,” she tweeted late Wednesday. “About to shoot one of the last scenes for the music video … I have to pick a costume from the Cali Dreams Tour, which would u pick? #KP3D.”
While she didn’t specify for which track she was shooting the video, when she sat down with MTV News in March, she noted that she did have a video concept in mind for her Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection track “Wide Awake.”
“I know exactly what that music video is. I know exactly who is directing it. I know the art direction, the people, the narrative,” she explained. “And I had that idea while I was writing the song.”
In the same interview, Perry talked about the dreamy breakup track. “Well, there were two songs that I had from Teenage Dream that I couldn’t put on, it was ‘Part of Me‘ and ‘Dressing Up.’ And then I knew we were doing the re-release and so I was like, ‘I got to get in the studio,’ because I can’t wait eight months to be able to put out this feeling that I’m feeling right now,” she said. ” ‘Cause God knows, it would take eight months to do another record. I couldn’t do it on the fly, to set up records it takes time.
“So I was like, ‘I’m getting into studio.’ I had two days to write and I wrote it with my regular crew,” she said of working with Dr. Luke, Max Martin and Bonnie McKee for the song. “Then I had two days to record. It was literally … I submitted the lyrics before I submitted the music because it was by the hair of my chinny chin chin that I put that song on the record. But I have a film that’s coming out in the summer that’s like a concert documentary. Not only did I write the song because I needed to flush that out of my system, but I wrote it for the film as well.”
